in Arizona. In 1894, Dr. Percival Lowell, a mathematician and
amateur astronomer from Massachusetts, was one of several astronomers
in search of clearer skies through which to observe the planets
and stars. Flagstaff, with its dark skies and high elevation
was an ideal location. Spurring Dr. Lowell on was the knowledge
that Mars would soon be at its closest point to the earth: an
ideal time to continue the study of the "Martian" planet more
closely. Percival Lowell assembled a small staff, borrowed two
telescopes and commenced observations. Two years later, he ordered
and installed the specially designed 24-inch Alvan Clark refracting
telescope.

- Marana
Chamber -
- Long before the coming of the Spanish Conquistadors and missionaries
in the 17th Century, the Marana/Avra Valley area was inhabited
by the Hohokam Indians, who developed extensive canal systems
to use the waters of the Santa Cruz River for irrigated agriculture.
By the coming of the first Spaniards to the area in the 1690's,
the Hohokam had long since disappeared, and their irrigation
works had become ruins. In 1961, the Arizona Highway Department
and the Federal Government removed most of the Marana business
district to widen Interstate 10. The High School, several of
the shops, and businesses relocated, but were not centralized
and were scattered throughout the area. Consequently there is
no "Main Street" in Old Marana, and the newly annexed Ina and
Orange Grove Roads business district has become the main shopping
region. In March of 1977, the Town of Marana was incorporated.
In August of that year, the townspeople elected their first
town council. In early 1979, the Town began spreading by an
aggressive annexation policy. Today, because of the vastness
of the land area in comparison with the small population, Marana
has become "The Biggest Little Town in America."

- Portal Peak Lodge -
- Click on Cave Creek Ranch. Unique lodging for Naturalists.
Cave Creek Ranch is located in Cave Creek Canyon, about a mile
west of Portal, in the Chiricahua Mountains of southeast Arizona.
At an elevation of 5,000 feet, the temperature in summer is
generally 10 to 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix or Tucson. Winters
are mild, but there is usually snow on the mountain. Fall color
is spectacular. In spring and summer many rare Mexican birds
come here to nest. By car we're about 3 hours southeast of Tucson,
or 3 hours west of El Paso. Cave Creek Ranch has been transformed
into the premier birding and natural history lodge in the Southwest.
The Chiricahua Mountains provide some of the greatest diversity
of species in all of North America, for birds as well as mammals,
reptiles, plants, and insects. With Mexico less than 40 miles
to the south, Cave Creek Ranch has hosted such exciting avian
visitors as the Blue Mockingbird, Yellow Grosbeak, and Aztec
Thrush. Resident birds include Montezuma, Scaled and Gambel's
Quail, Painted Redstart, Juniper Titmouse, and numerous owl
and hummingbird species (a total of 12 hummingbird species in
the summer, 3 in the winter). Elegant Trogons nest nearby; in
spring and summer they have been seen foraging in our trees.
In winter, exciting hawk and sparrow watching can be found in
the valleys around the Chiricahuas. The Chiricahuas are a naturalist's
paradise, something scientists have known for decades. The American
Museum of Natural History operates its famous Southwest Research
Station 4 miles from Cave Creek Ranch. Scientists come from
all over the world to study the area's unique reptiles, amphibians,
insects, plants, mammals, and birds.

civilizations, such as the Hohokam and Anasazi, survived in
a hostile environment by growing crops using irrigation canals.
The techniques they developed centuries ago are still being
used today, and have made the region a major supplier of cotton.
Travel back to the mid-1800's when prospectors first came to
the area in search of gold and silver. Although they didn't
"strike it rich" with these metals, they found another that
has been a staple of the local economy to this day, COPPER.
During the 20th century, a new "resource" was discovered. The
high elevation and dry climate of the region make it an ideal
location for studying the skies. Astronomy has become the newest
attraction, with several major observatories now located throughout
Arizona.
