The Valley Railroad has two histories. The first begins with its creation in the days after the Civil War, when steamboats ruled the Connecticut River, when railroads were opening the West, and when Ulysses S. Grant was President, and the age of the robber barons was at its height. The second history begins a century later with its resurrection and the running, on July 29, 1971, of the revived railroad's first passenger train one hundred years to the day after the first one chugged ceremoniously north from Saybrook on the shore of Long Island Sound up the River to Hartford.

William Gillette was born in 1853 to a rich Hartford family. He is a descendent on his mothers side of Thomas Hooker, an original settler of the area. His father was a senator. His family expected him to be a respectable member of society and follow in his father's foot steps but instead he decided he wanted to be an actor. His family threatened to disown him if he continued his wished. He paid no heed to them and he was promptly disinherited.
