creation in the days after the Civil War, when steamboats ruled
the Connecticut River, when railroads were opening the West, and

its resurrection and the running, on July 29, 1971, of the revived
railroad's first passenger train one hundred years to the day after
the first one chugged ceremoniously north from Saybrook on the shore
