The 1879 Steamboat Dock, at the foot of Main Street in historic Essex Village, served as a port of call for steamboat service from New York City to Hartford, Connecticut.

Essex - Valley Railroad Steam Train and Riverboat Ride -

The Valley Railroad has two histories. The first begins with its creation in the days after the Civil War, when steamboats ruled the Connecticut River, when railroads were opening the West, and when Ulysses S. Grant was President, and the age of the robber barons was at its height. The second history begins a century later with its resurrection and the running, on July 29, 1971, of the revived railroad's first passenger train one hundred years to the day after the first one chugged ceremoniously north from Saybrook on the shore of Long Island Sound up the River to Hartford.
