ROAD TO HANA

Every curve of the road reveals another photo opportunity. The road to Hana reaches out and demands that you stop and admire the scenery - waterfalls - tropical jungle - checker board fields of taro under cultivation - black lava rocks rimmed with white foam set next to towering green cliffs in an ocean of the bluest blue. This is the Hawaii you see in travel posters. The 52 miles from Kahului Airport to Hana is an all-day event. Get an early start. The road twists its way around 600 curves, over 54 bridges and along some of the most scenic coastline in Hawaii. Fill the gas tank up. Stop in Paia and purchase a Picnic Basket from Picnic's Restaurant. Say Aloha to Diane the owner.

The Drive to Hana -

On the Hana Highway - The Journey is the Adventure. Cool spray from a roadside waterfall ...fragrant ginger flowers scenting the air ...spectacular cliffs plunging to the sea ...the road to Hana is an unforgettable, multi-sensory experience. You must make the trip at least once, or you haven't tasted the very essence of Maui. As you sightsee, please pull over often to wave local drivers by. Bring drinking water - Do Not Drink from the Streams. Remember, the Drive itself is the real Adventure. Most people know Hana not for itself, but for what it takes to get there. The Hana HIghway - is Hawai'i's most daunting, it curves and swerves fifty precarious miles past sea cliffs and water falls, over dozens of antiquated, narrow bridges, with the whole improbable stretch crowded by a constant stream of white-knuckled sightseers in flame-red-convertibles. Hana is the most isolated town on one of the most isolated land masses on earth, and its reputation as a backwater is rock solid. Relax and Enjoy the ride. Mahalo.
