- Waimea was once a cowboy town where the cowboys - the paniolos
- of the massive Parker Ranch roamed. That was in the last century
when the ranch covered over 200,000 ha. Now it is only 91,125 ha
but it is still one of the largest ranches in the United States. The
story of the Parker Ranch is one of the great adventures. John Palmer
Parker was a shipâs clerk from Massachusetts, who jumped ship in
1809. King Kamehameha gave him the job of maintaining the fish ponds
at Honaunau. He went walkabout shortly afterwards but returned permanently
in 1814. At the time a problem had arisen with wild cattle. A small
herd had been landed in 1793 and had gone bush. Wild cattle and
horses were wandering all over the island. Kamehameha gave Parker
permission to shoot the cattle and sell the meat and hides. Parker
managed the business for the king and, by taking his pay in live
animals, swiftly built up his own herds. He married Kamehamehaâs
granddaughter Kipikane. He moved to the village of Waimea in 1835,
establishing his homestead at Mana. Mexican, Native American, and
Spanish cowboys were brought to the island to round up the horses
and cattle. Their style, skill and equipment was taken up by the
Hawaiians who called themselves paniolos - from Espaoles or Spaniards.
Although there were setbacks the ranch grew until under Thelma Parker
at the turn of the century it was one of the worldâs great ranches.
The last Parker left the remains of the ranch to a charitable trust
and it now runs some 55,000 cattle. You can learn more about the
history of the ranch at the Parker Ranch Visitor Center, located
in the Parker Ranch Shopping Center in central Waimea.
