Tushka Homma -
Choctaw Nation Museum. Between 1835 and 1860 the Choctaws in Indian Territory experienced peaceful years. During this time a location was selected to be used as the Choctaw Nation Capital. It was in the Kiamichi Valley between the Kiamichi River and the Potato Hills. In 1838 a 45' by 25' two-room structure was built and named Nanih Wayia in memory of their sacred mound in the Old Choctaw country in Mississippi. That Original building burned in 1849. The permanent location for the Capital was a prairie only two and a half miles from the original Capital, Nanih Wayia. It was named "Tushka Homma", meaning "Red Warrior". This was to be the seat of the new government.
