Tourism and Recreation Department -
- We are a team of 1,500 Oklahomans. Some of us work full-time,
and others work on a seasonal basis to ensure customers are
served during peak travel times. We maintain thousands of buildings,
keep the grounds in our state parks attractive - the trash picked
up and the lawn mowed. We publish brochures and information
to help travelers plan their trip to or within Oklahoma, and
then greet them at our state welcome centers. We provide security
for state park guests and protect Oklahoma's natural resources.
We show people the "real" Oklahoma in the award-winning Oklahoma
Today Magazine, and through a variety of marketing and advertising
efforts, including the Discover Oklahoma television show. We
conduct education programs through schools, communities and
the parks themselves. We design and build amenities so all of
our customers can access better, safer recreation opportunities.

Homma -
- Choctaw Nation Museum. Between 1835 and 1860 the Choctaws
in Indian Territory experienced peaceful years. During this
time a location was selected to be used as the Choctaw Nation
Capital. It was in the Kiamichi Valley between the Kiamichi
River and the Potato Hills. In 1838 a 45' by 25' two-room structure
was built and named Nanih Wayia in memory of their sacred mound
in the Old Choctaw country in Mississippi. That Original building
burned in 1849. The permanent location for the Capital was a
prairie only two and a half miles from the original Capital,
Nanih Wayia. It was named "Tushka Homma", meaning "Red Warrior".
This was to be the seat of the new government.
