significant historic region at the western end of the Lewis &

the Rockies; a place that takes visitors back to simpler times,
its architecture dominated by hundreds of Victorian homes clinging
to steep wooded hillsides and with a revitalized 1920's era downtown;
all set against a backdrop of tremendous natural beauty in the
temperate rain forest at the mouth of the Columbia River.

can be found in our seven distinct regions. Make sure that you

- Department of Agriculture -
- Long before surveyed boundaries existed to create what has come
to be known as Oregon, thousands of indigenous peoples, speaking
scores of different languages, lived with nature here and practiced
a totally different concept of what we call "agriculture." The
Indians of the Oregon Country had developed a tried and true approach
to hunting, trapping, harvesting, and preserving that seemed primitive
and incomprehensible to the Euroamerican entrepreneurs, settlers,
and missionaries. Attempts to "civilize" the native peoples ended
in miserable failure ......

- Museum of Science and Industry -
- OMSI began as an idea in the minds of a few Portland civic leaders
who wanted to create a museum that didn't have "do not touch"
signs on every exhibit. They believed interest in science is best
cultivated in an active, engaging environment away from school
books and blackboards, and that open-ended exploration of science
would pique the interest of people of all ages.

- The Oregon wine story is the story of people and a place that
is unlike any other. It is a story of people who will not acknowledge
words like "no," "can't do," "shouldn't do." It's the story of
families planting, harvesting and crushing grapes together, creating
a legacy. It's the entrepreneurs who came to Oregon to make wine
in the place where salmon and forests surround the land.
