Age Floods Institute - Missoula Floods -
- The Ice Age Floods Institute is a non-profit organization of
citizens throughout Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon who
are committed to tell the story of the cataclysmic floods that
swept across the Pacific Northwest thousands of years ago. Earth-Changing
Drama... In a Geologic Heartbeat. The Pacific Northwest was the
stage for one of the world's greatest scientifically documented
floods. Little more than 12,000 years ago during the last throes
of the Ice Age, a "finger" of the continental ice sheet reached
south into the Idaho panhandle, damming the mouth of the Clark
Fork River and creating a monstrous lake known as Lake Missoula.
Lake Missoula stretched for hundreds of miles across western Montana
and contained more water than Lake Erie and Lake Ontario combined.
The ice could only temporarily restrain such an immense volume
of water. When the lake reached its maximum depth, water burst
through the ice barrier, shooting out of Clark Fork Canyon at
a rate 10 times the combined flow of all the rivers in the world.
At that rate the lake would have drained in as little as 48 hours.
In a scene belonging more to the realm of science fiction than
to reality, this towering mass of water and ice, over 2,000 feet
high at its source, literally shook the ground as it thundered
toward the ocean at speeds approaching 65 miles per hour. The
deluge quickly stripped away 200 feet of soil and cut deep canyons
or "coulees" into the underlying bedrock, creating a vast maze-like
network clearly visible from space. The torrent even widened and
deepened the Columbia Gorge, baring the majestic cliffs seen today.

- Klamath
County Department of Tourism -
- The Klamath Basin, a depression formed by a huge prehistoric
lake in the eastern foothills of the Cascade mountains, has long
been the home of the Klamath, Modoc, and Yahooskin Indian tribes.
The Basin was first visited by others when trappers came into
the region in the 1820's. Later explorers came, searching for
a southern route through the Cascade mountains. In 1863, Forth
Klamath was established at the northern end of Upper Klamath Lake.
Because of the use of water for early transportation, the fort's
provisioner eventually extended his operations by ferry to the
southern end of the lake, where the Link river joined Upper &
Lower Klamath Lakes.

- Long before surveyed boundaries existed to create what has come
to be known as Oregon, thousands of indigenous peoples, speaking
scores of different languages, lived with nature here and practiced
a totally different concept of what we call "agriculture." The
Indians of the Oregon Country had developed a tried and true approach
to hunting, trapping, harvesting, and preserving that seemed primitive
and incomprehensible to the Euroamerican entrepreneurs, settlers,
and missionaries. Attempts to "civilize" the native peoples ended
in miserable failure ......

who wanted to create a museum that didn't have "do not touch"

books and blackboards, and that open-ended exploration of science
would pique the interest of people of all ages.

Coast Highway 101 -
- The 101 Cafe began its life as a small 20-seat diner in 1928,
opened by the Ekegren family. It was just the small dining room
where the counters are now. As today, the restaurant was noted
for its breakfast, which is still served all day. The Cafe was
named for the old highway which it fronted Highway 101. The Greyhound
bus stopped right in front until the 1940's when a bus station
was located downtown. The diner enjoyed the traffic generated
by Highway 101, which was the main access from Los Angeles to
San Diego until 1953 when Highway 101 was relocated to the present
location of Interstate 5. This changed the nature of the business.
For a look at the past, click on the Hwy 101 links. This web site
