- All-terrain vehicles are allowed on trails in many public
land areas. Please contact each office for specific rules

- Climate
-
- SUMMER - Hot days, cool nights. Pack summer cloths. Add
a sweatshirt at night, especially for higher elevations. ..
FALL - Warm days, crisp cool nights. Wear jeans and T-shirts.
Bring a warm jacket if you're going out star-gazing at night
.. WINTER - Snow and cold (interspersed with blasts of warmer
air). Add or subtract layers as needed. One day may be cold
...the next almost balmy .. SPRING - Generally warm days,
sometimes wet. Cool nights. Bring shorts and T-shirts, a pair
of jeans and a jacket. As in all cities, the weatherman does
not have an office with windows, so don't rely on the weather
report.

- Interstate 90 runs east-west across the state. Interstate
29 runs north-south. Both offer easy access to the state ....but
you'll discover some of South Dakota's best scenery when you
get off the interstates and venture out into our backcountry.

Centers -
- Make one of our Information Centers along I-90 and I-29
your first stop. They are staffed with travel counselors during
the summer months. You can also rent the South Dakota travel
tape series and learn about the state's history, legends and
tall tales while you're driving. The centers have electronic
information systems that allow you to access information on
motels, attractions, campgrounds, restaurants and events statewide.

dividing line runs north-south roughly down the center of
the state.
