St. Helens - Kalama -
- ....small town, big horizons. Kalama received its name from
the river two miles to the north. The Kalama River was named
after John Kalama, a full-blooded Hawaiian, who was born on
the Hawaiian islands in 1814. John was forced to leave his Hawaiian
home at sixteen years of age to seek employment on one of the
fur trading vessels that made its way to the Northwest in the
early 1830's. The rough life of the sea did not appeal to John,
so he found the Nisqually Indians where he sang his native songs
and joined in their festivities. John eventually married Mary
Martin, daughter of Chief Martin. John built a cabin near Tumwater
for his bride. When the Indians made their annual trip to the
Cowlitz for smelt and berries, John Kalama and his wife went
with them. John did not enjoy being on the move all the time
so for that and perhaps other reasons he did not return to the
Sound, but took up permanent residence at the mouth of the river
bearing his name. He hunted, fished, and trapped for many years,
and the area soon became recognized as his domain.

miles of forest in only 10 minutes. The eruption transformed
the surrounding landscape, creating opportunities for geologic
and biological research. Children in school today and adults
need a connection with the magnitude of this event. The Mount
St. Helens Institute's role is to reconnect this living volcano

St. Helens - Mount St. Helens National Monument Hiking -
- Courtesy of the Blue Heron Inn. There are many trails on the
east side of Mount St. Helens, leading hikers into the heart
of the blast area. They provide outstanding views of the new
lava dome. The south side of Mount St. Helens provides outstanding
opportunities to discover the ancient lava flows and recent
mudflows that scoured down the slopes of Mount St. Helens. Trails
on the west side of Mount St. Helens are few but what is lacking
in number is made up with unparalleled views of this volcanic
landscape. Trails, campgrounds, and old growth forests can all
be found just north of the National Volcanic Monument in the
Randle Ranger District. These areas relatively unaffected by
the volcano offer a sharp contrast to the blast area just a
few miles to the south. And there are a number of trails which
skirt the perimeter of the Mount St. Helens Volcano. A climbing
permit is required for these trails. To ensure a quality hiking
experience and your safety, wear sturdy shoes, bring sunscreen,
and carry one quart or more of water per person.
