- American Cabaret Theatre -
- Although CABARET is a 14th century French word meaning "wine
cellar", it was picked as the word used to describe a remarkable
new art form that emerged in Paris in 1881 and spread throughout
Europe. At its core, CABARET is an entertainment in song, dance,
and vignettes that draws attention to a society's foibles - it's
good and bad sides - and then gently prods it towards self awareness.
Within a few years after its birth, CABARET established a growing
and dedicated audience of artists and intellectuals: Picasso,
Stravinsky, Brecht, and many more who lent the influence of their
art forms to this growing genre. By 1915, Moscow had a CABARET
and the notion of presenting ideas through humor, music, or satire
caught on throughout most of the world up through World War I
and World War II.

- Paramount Theatre -
- The face of entertainment has changed drastically over the 67
years that the Paramount has been in continuous operation. In
the theater's early days, one was likely to see a motley assortment
of vaudeville performers on the Paramount stage, perhaps followed
by the latest celluloid fantasy starring Cary Grant or some lesser
known star. In the '50s and '60s, the theater was dedicated strictly
to movies, and hosted each adventure in James Bond's 007 series.
For the last many years, the Paramount has been the favored place
for touring acts that run the full gamut of popular performing
arts. This meant everything from heavily amplified, leather-bound
rock bands to smooth and sensual crooners, glamorous Broadway
musicals, and remorseless comedians just about anything with popular
appeal. Everyone I know has a favorite concert or show they've
seen at the Paramount. One of many I remember fondly is a concert
by the Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

- Fremont Oktoberfest -
- Historically, in old Germany, the brewing season began with
the fall harvest of barley and hops and continued through the
cold months of the year, due to lack of refrigeration. The last
brewing happened in March. Any beer left at harvest time had to
be consumed before the new beer arrived. The last Saturday of
September through the first Sunday of October was designated as
the time to drink-up all of last season's beer. It officially
became Oktoberfest in 1810, when Crown Prince Ludwig declared
a 10-day celebration in honor of his betrothal to Princess Theresia
of Bavaria.
