- Tacoma-Pierce County Convention & Visitor Bureau. Puget Sound
Indian tribes, such as the Puyallup and Nisqually, called the
Tacoma-Pierce County area home for centuries before the first
European explorers arrived. Primarily a hunting-gathering culture,
these indigenous people revered the great mountain towering above
their valleys. They called the mountain "Tacobet," meaning "Mother
of Waters." However, "Tacobet" was interpreted by the white man
as "Tahoma," which later became the name of a pioneer city, Tacoma.

after Swedish settler Nicholas de Lin started the first business
in 1852. De Lin's sawmill was the first major means of employment
for the settlers who braved harrowing conditions to reach this
area, discovered by Captain James Vancouver in 1792.
