East -
- ......east of the Cascades crest, the landscape undergoes a
dramatic transformation. Jagged peaks and dense vegetation receded
into a high desert plateau of pine-covered buttes, deep canyons
and water-carved gorges. Sculpted by powerful geological forces,
Eastern Washington is a place of big views and wide-open spaces.
Several rivers run through it, including the fabled Columbia,
which carved Washington's southern border into a colorful gorge
with spectacular rock faces and forest-clad shores. Courtesy of

East - Cashmere - Liberty Orchards -
- Just after the turn of the century, a young Armenian named Armen
Tertsagian emigrated from the Near East to the United States,
working his way from Ellis Island across the rugged continent
to the infant city of Seattle. There he met Mark Balaban, another
young Armenian who was visiting from England. It wasn't long before
the two became fast friends and decided to venture into business
together. Mark and Armen packed up and headed for Eastern Washington.
On the far side of Stevens Pass, nestled at the foot of the Cascade
Mountains they found a valley carpeted with fruit orchards. It
was here, in the fertile Vale of Cashmere that they settled, purchasing
an apple farm which they named Liberty Orchards in honor of their
new homeland. Today, Liberty Orchards has grown to be a genuine
Northwest tradition and 80,000 yearly tourists come to Cashmere
to visit the Country Store and tour the Candy Kitchens. And when
they do, they don't find a large, impersonal factory... They find
town folks making and packing Aplets & Cotlets much the same as
Mark and Armen did all so many years ago.

it menacingly loomed behind cars and trucks on all country roads.

East - Odessa -
- Come visit Odessa and you might want to stay. More and more
people are discovering our town. And they like what they see.
We're a progressive community. Our citizens are growth-oriented,
but at the same time they are mindful of maintaining a small-town
atmosphere. The Odessa territory was first settled around the
1880s by a cattleman who felt the bunchgrass covered land, with
Crab Creek running through the center, was one of the best range
lands in the Northwest. One such man was George W. Finney, later
known as the Founder of Odessa, who once homesteaded land upon
which the town now stands. In 1892, the Great Northern Railroad
was built through this part of the country, with a sidetrack known
as the Odessa Siding. In order to attract settlers to the Odessa
country and insure themselves of future success, the Great Northern
Railroad offered immigrants free passage and the opportunity to
obtain homesteads. By 1898, Mr. Finney, realizing the potential
for a town, donated his land and platted the townsite. 80% of
the immigrants settling in the Odessa area consisted of Germans
from Russia.

East - Okanogan Country - Winthrop - Freestone Inn & Cabins
-
- Located in the Methow Valley. In the early 1940's a local rancher
and packer named Jack Wilson built six cabins along the banks
of a local creek. Calling his new venture the Early Winter Resort,
Wilson created not only one of the hardest to reach businesses
in North America but also a piece of local legend. As word of
Jack's hospitality and the spectacular beauty of the upper Methow
Valley spread, his hunting, fishing and back country tours achieved
a glowing reputation. So much so, that by the mid-60's people
were coming from all over the world to visit Jack and indulge
in the area's extraordinary allure. While some of those visitors
may have thought the word "resort" was rather grand for six simple
cabins, Jack's dreams were much larger. Once the highway opened
and more people began visiting the area Jack planned to build
a facility that would live up to the scale of the natural surroundings.
Today, the Freestone Inn, Lakeside Lodges, and refurbished Early
Winter Cabins keep that spirit alive. Renowned for their year-round
comfort and appeal, the Inn, Cabins and Lodges exceed even Jack's
imagination and provide the perfect get-away for not only the
avid outdoors person, but also those who want nothing more than
to simply relax.

buildings in Grant County, built in 1905. It started as a stable

new owner then was Roxie Thorson and her husband. He had a dream
to make bath salts from the Soap Lake Mineral water, but within
2 years of the purchase, he became ill with pneumonia and passed
away. This left Roxie to carry on, and as it goes, she became
the queen of the salt mine until 1986, when at 96 she passed away.
Discover Soap Lake's only historic beachfront Inn. The Inn was
completely renovated and reopened in 1993. As you enter the hotel

East - Tri-Cities - Columbia River Journeys -
- Join us for an exhilarating tour of the Hanford Reach, the last
free-flowing section of the Columbia River within the United States.
As our twin-engine, shallow draft jet boats motor upstream, signs
of civilization disappear. You enter the seldom-seen lands and
waters of the "Reach", where coyotes outnumber people. Wildlife
sightings are common. Giant White Pelicans (endangered in most
portions of the West, but common on the Reach) gracefully glide
by on ten foot wingspans. Trophy mule deer browse along the shores.
Great Blue Herons, terns, beaver, porcupines and other species
are often seen. You will see the ghostly, monumental hulks of
long-silenced nuclear reactors -- the only visible signs of the
top secret Manhattan Project, having the mission of producing
bomb-grade plutonium during World War II and the Cold War. You
may feel like the first people to travel into this remote area,
but Native Americans lived along the Reach since the beginning
of time. You will learn about these people and about the first
non-Native American to visit the Reach, Englishman David Thompson,
who canoed the Columbia from the Rocky Mountains to the sea in
1811. You will also learn about the settlers who founded the towns
of Hanford and White Bluffs in the early 1900's, and those who
followed. This is a tour far from mainstream America, generally
inaccessible by road, accessible only by shallow-draft boat. Let
us show you the beauty of the Reach.

- Near Lake Chelan. Ohme Gardens, perched high on a rock bluff
overlooking the Wenatchee Valley, is the achievement of sixty
years of work by the Ohme family. Their efforts have gradually
transformed the once barren hill into one of Americas leading
gardens, visited by travelers from around the world. Unlike a
formal flower garden, Ohme Gardens is completely natural in appearance,
with emphasis on greenery. Patterned after high mountain country,
the grounds have a quiet, restful beauty that isn't dependent
on floral displays. The evergreen trees and low-growing plants
have been blended with the existing rock formations to create
effects varying from the lush growth of rain forest to the variegated
patterns of an alpine meadow. Where once there was nothing but
sagebrush and dust, there is now shaded fern bordered pools with
trickling waterfalls. The once brown slopes are covered with a
profusion of greenery. The weathered rock formations emerge from
the carpet-like plantings. Groves of trees create shady glens
and secluded hideaways, and complete the mountain setting. The
stone pathways wander from one level to another, across irregular
shaped lawns, to the blue green ponds, rustic shelters, the famous
wishing well, and on to the highest point. Vista areas offer sweeping
views of the Wenatchee Valley, Columbia River, and Cascade Mountains.
Visitors may spend half an hour to half a day wandering in the
serene, peaceful atmosphere.

- The Washington State Apple Blossom Festival was a semi-autonomous
division of the Wenatchee Chamber of Commerce, and is now an independent
organization. It is the oldest major festival in the state of
Washington. The Festival was born in 1919, the brainchild of Mrs.
E. Wagner, wife of the district's first apple shipper, and a native
of New Zealand. She enjoyed the festival of her childhood so much
that she suggested beginning a similar festival in the Wenatchee
valley. The Ladies Musical Club produced the first festival in
1920, and the first Apple Blossom Festival Queen was Fern Prowell
who reigned over the festivities, then called "Blossom Days."
The one-day event in Memorial Park involved songs, speeches, May
poles, and baseball. Six festivals passed before the opening of
the Stevens Pass Highway, Wenatchee's first direct link to Seattle.
When Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon made airborne history terminating
the first non-stop, transpacific flight in 1931, fourteen festivals
had come and gone. the Washington State Apple Blossom Festival
now draws thousands of visitors from around the world during the
last weekend in April and the first weekend in May. The festival
is for 12 days.

Swithen Bairn is certainly all of that, but the vistas are nowhere
